Cottage Grove hosts Oregon Gran Fondo bike ride June 2

From a press release

Bicyclists of all abilities will gather in Cottage Grove the weekend of June 2 for competition and recreational riding at The Oregon Gran Fondo.

Elite and recreational bicyclists will participate in a traditional European event that includes a variety of courses and social riding alongside competitive, chip-timed racers.

In addition to rides through countryside and forests, the event features charity breakfasts, free camping for registrants at Bohemia Park in historic downtown Cottage Grove, an expo, raffles and prizes, and post-ride refreshments including a beer garden.

Gran Fondo traditionally means "big ride." It originated in France and Italy where bicyclists of all ages were invited to ride a stage of one of the professional grand tours, such as the Tour de France.

State to release salmon in Coast Fork to create rec fishery

From ODFW

For the first time in more than three decades the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will release a substantial number of spring chinook salmon into the Coast Fork Willamette River in hopes of establishing a recreational fishery between Cottage Grove and Springfield.

The department plans on March 12 to release about 210,000 chinook salmon smolts into several reaches of the Coast Fork Willamette downstream of Dorena and Cottage Grove reservoirs to the river’s confluence with the Middle Fork Willamette in Springfield. If this initiative is successful, anglers could be pulling adult hatchery spring salmon out of the Coast Fork Willamette when the fish return as adults in 2014.
